In Nigeria, plate number registration is a must-do for every car user or owner. If not done the proper way, there are chances that one will fall victim to quack registration vendors.

The plate number registration should be done by the owner or the user of the car instead.

There are easy ways to carry out plate number registration in Nigeria. Carrying a fake plate number is a crime penalized by the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC).

Before using the roads, every driver needs to have completed his/her vehicle registration to avoid the wrath of the (FRSC) or other agencies like the Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIO) and the Nigerian Police Force.

Easy Ways to Check Plate Number Validity in Nigeria

The number plate is an authorized legal identity given to a car owner or user. This plate is a flat metal piece with numbers on it specifically for just an individual vehicle owner and it is not supposed to be shared. This is usually issued by the FRSC in all local divisions of the agency.

Checking or verifying the owner is quite simple. The FRSC has ensured that the process of checking the number plate in Nigeria is easy and accessible to everyone who wants to verify.

It can be checked via SMS or through the FRSC website for verification. Any medium one decides to use is good as far as the number is correct.

Online Plate Number verification method

Here are simple steps for verifying plate number online:

  • Log on to the FRSC plate number verification website
  • Click on “verify plate number”
  • Provide your plate number on the next page
  • And lastly, click on “verify”

Plate Number Verification through SMS

Verifying plate numbers via SMS is easier and it saves time and energy. One won’t have to go through the stress of visiting the FRSC station or outlet.

The commission has provided a code in which a text message could be sent. The SMS should be written thus: type “verifyplateNo” and send to 33324.

The sender would be notified almost immediately if the plate number is valid or not.

Other Reasons Why the Plate Number is Essential

There are a lot of reasons why a valid number plate is important. In instances where a car gets stolen or missing, the number plate can be the only means by which the car can be identified.

The number can be therefore used to trace the whereabouts of the vehicle.

Also, if an accident should occur, the number plate could be used to identify the owner of the vehicle.

Ways to Check the Plate Number Owner Directly from the FRSC

The need to check or verify a particular plate number directly from the authority may arise in cases of robbery, kidnapping, accident, etc. This could be done in three different steps:

Step I: Report the Case to the Police

The first thing to always do at this point is to involve the authorities especially the police force. there should be a good reason why the plate number owner should be checked.

Remembering the plate number can go a long way in helping solve the case.

Step II: Get a Police Report

The next thing to do is to get a police report from the nearest police station. This police report is very important because it would help in convincing the FRSC to reveal the number plate details.

Step III: Visit the FRSC Office

Go to the nearest FRSC office and present the police report for further dealings. Details and information about the plate number owner are usually reserved to the FRSC authority alone.

The police report enables one to be able to have access to such details.

Penalty for Number Plate Violation in Nigeria

The penalty for number plate violation is punishable by the FRSC. These offenses and penalties are clearly stated on the offense sheet pursuant to section 10(4), 28(2) of the FRSC (establishment) act, 2007, and regulation 220 of NRTR, 2012. According to the sheet, the violation is fined 3000 Naira.

To avoid having problems with the authorities, having a driving license is not just enough. Completing the necessary rudiments of a new vehicle before using it on the roads is very important. All these have been laid out for the safety of all Nigerian drivers and pedestrians alike.
