Gloria Griffin was a gospel artist who used her voice and songs to evangelize and minister to people. She decided to use her singing talent to preach and spread the gospel of God.
At some points in her career, she became part of gospel singing groups like The Roberta Martin Singers. While with the group, she made quite a successful singer and was widely known and respected. However, this is not to say that outside the group she wasn’t famous.
Griffin had her own solo career before and after being part of the Roberta Martin Singers. She is mostly famous for this song she composed titled God Specializes. The song was made popular by Roberta’s singing group and has been sung in different renditions over the years.
Who Is Gloria Griffin?
Gloria Griffin was born in Mississippi and grew up in a household of both nuclear and extended family members. However, before she turned 2 years old, her family moved to Illinois. In East Saint Louis, she, her family, and grandmother settled down and began a new phase of their lives.
At the age of 5, Gloria made her music debut as a lover of gospel music. She sang for the very first time in her church as a solo act. When she grew older, she began to have a better connection with Christ and at the age of 9, she accepted her faith in Him.
By 12 years, Griffin decided to get baptized when she had moved to Chicago, Illinois. Here she became a member of the Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church and she was a member of the church’s choir. The pastor was late Rev Ledbetter who served in the church for 8 years while Griffin was a member there.
Unsatisfied with the MMBC, Gloria moved to Greater Harvest Baptist Church where she hoped to find a deeper connection with her faith and the Bible. Here, late Rev Louis Boddie’s preaching of Praying, fasting, and the consistent studying of the Bible was more satisfying to her.
As a member of this church, the new convert joined the late Clara Ward Singers and began to travel with late Mahalia Jackson. At this point, she had begun to find fulfillment in singing as she joined various singing groups and choirs.
Later on, Griffin left the GHBC and joined the Christian Tabernacle Church whose pastor was Maceo Woods. As expected, she still used her voice to praise God as she found joy doing so.
Gloria Griffin Was Part of Two Gospel Music Groups
Gloria was, for the better part of her career, since the start as a gospel singer, a solo artist. However, while she toured with Mahalia, she joined two gospel music groups that aligned with her style of music and beliefs.
Griffin was part of The Caravans where she sang with Ms. Albertina Walker. The group was founded by Robert Anderson and Albertina Walker and became very popular in the 1950s and 60s.
She was introduced to the world alongside the likes of Dorothy Norwood, Inez Andrews, Rev. James Cleveland, and Bessie Griffin. However, she was only part of the group for a year (1954-1955)
While her career as a gospel singing evangelist was in motion, she had the opportunity to join one of America’s biggest gospel groups in 1957. She joined the Roberta Martins group as a replacement for Bessie Folk. Bessie had been involved in a fatal car accident and consequently couldn’t sing. Therefore Folk left the group and her place was filled by Gloria Griffin.
Where Is Gloria Griffin Now?
Griffin would always be remembered as a legendary minister who used her powerful voice and songs to touch the lives of many. She left the world sometime in 1995 and upon her death, she had at least two children; a boy and a girl.
Her daughter is named Jacquelyn Griffin and she is a very proud daughter. The name of the son remains unknown though. She also has a granddaughter who has revealed herself and goes by the name Monique (tmonique11).
In the early 90s, Griffin was still actively performing with bands and groups as well as doing her solo career. Although at that time, she was battling an illness, she was still able to go for ministrations.
She appeared as a guest soloist during a Women’s Day celebration in 1995. This was according to the testimony of a woman recognized as Beverly Barksdale who said Griffin’s song ‘God Specializes’ had a great effect on her.
Some comments suggest that Gloria Griffin suffered from a failed lung and perhaps other ailments. These consequently led to her death and the loss of a great gospel singer. However, to date, her music and testimonies still have amazing effects on people who listen to the words she sings. A lot of people still talk about how her unique voice and music bring tears to their eyes and belief back to their hearts.
