There are quite a number of bridges in Africa but the ones that cover a long distance mostly over a large body of water are really captivating.
Some of the bridges in Africa were built long before now. A few were constructed during the colonial period in the 1950s.

1. The 6th October Bridge
The 6th October Bridge currently regarded as the longest bridge in Africa. It is located in Cairo, Egypt. The bridge is built along the River Nile and it is 20.5 kilometers long. The construction of the bridge began in 1966 and was inaugurated in 1996.
2. The Third Mainland Bridge
The third mainland bridge in Lagos, Nigeria used to be the longest bridge in Africa until 1996 when 6th October was inaugurated.
The third mainland bridge is now the second largest bridge in Africa and it covers the mainland down to Lagos Island.
The bridge was built by Julius Berger Nigeria PLC and it is 10.5 kilometers long. The bridge was inaugurated by President Ibrahim Babangida in 1990.
Following reports from the authorities, the bridge was said to be closed for six months to undergo some repairs from July 24 2020 to January 24, 2021.
3. The Suez Canal Bridge
This bridge is also called the Egyptian-Japanese friendship bridge and it links Africa and Eurasia.
The Suez Canal Bridge is located in El Quantara in Egypt and it covers a distance of 3.9 kilometers. It is also called Shohada 25 January Bridge.
The bridge was built with the assistance of the Japanese government.
4. The Mozambique Island Bridge
This bridge is located on the island of Mozambique. It crosses over the Indian Ocean and connects the island of Mozambique to the mainland. The bridge was completed in 1969 and it is 3.8 kilometers.
5. The Dona Ana Bridge
The Dona Ana Bridge is also located in Mozambique. The bridge connects the two halves of the country.
It was first constructed as a railway bridge that links Malawi and the Moatize coal fields to the port of Beira. It was completed in 1934. The Dona Ana Bridge covers a distance of 3.67 kilometers.

6. The Armando Emilio Guebuza Bridge, Mozambique
This bridge is located in Mozambique and it connects the provinces of Sofala and Zambezia.
The bridge crosses over the Zambezi River. The bridge was inaugurated on August 1, 2009, and it was named after the former President of Mozambique, Armando Guebuza.
The bridge is 2.37 kilometers long.
7. The Qasr Al-Nil Bridge
This bridge is formerly known as Khedive Ismail Bridge but it was renamed after the Egyptian revolution of 1952. The name Qasr El Nil is in Arabic and it could be translated as Palace of the Nile.
The bridge is built across the River Nile and was designed by Ralph Anthony Freeman. It measures 1.932 kilometers long. The bridge was inaugurated on June 6, 1933.
It is said that the bridge is used by young Egyptian couples as a place for an outdoor date.
8. The Wouri River Bridge, Cameroun
This bridge was built by the French colonial masters in the 1950s. The bridge runs through Douala to the port of Bonaberi.
It is measured 1.8 kilometers and it carries both road and rail traffic to the west of Cameroun.

9. The Mkapa Bridge, Tanzania
The Mkapa Bridge in Tanzania was named after the 3rd president of Tanzania, Benjamin Mkapa. The bridge is one of the longest in Africa and it was inaugurated in 2003.
The construction was funded by the Kuwait Fund, OPEC, and also the Government of Saudi Arabia. The bridge is measured 970 meters long.
10. The Katima Mulilo Bridge, Namibia
This bridge serves as a boundary between Katima Mulilo, Namibia, and also Sesheke in Zambia. Te Katima Mulilo Bridge built across the Zambezi River and was inaugurated on May 13, 2004. The bridge measures 900 meters long.
