Skhumba is a South African top comedian. He is one of the comedians from SA whose jokes always leave the listeners’ ribs cracking and bodies shaking from heartfelt laughter.

Skhumba also works at Kaya FM where he cohosts the new breakfast show with veteran Thomas Msengana.

He is also the voice for Tembisa FM.

Skhumba started this journey to stardom a while ago and over the period, has risen to be one of the top SA comedians.

He has fans that love his shows on air and love to watch him perform and crack them up because he is quite able to grab and hold his audience’s attention for a long time.

Quick Biography of Skhumba

Skhumba originally named ‘Skhumba Hlophe’ but also referred to by the nickname ‘Big Banger’ was born on the 31st of August in Tembisa the North of Johannesburg.

He grew up there with his grandmother.

He struggled through school for the beginning of his life but eventually found his calling in comedy and is doing amazingly well now.

Growing up in his grandmother’s house with both his mother and grandmother made him really close to her.

Although he greatly feared her and his mom, he thanks them enormously for helping him stay out of trouble and shaping him to being the man he is now.

The eventual demise of his grandmother took a toll on him and he took to sharing his pains with his followers.

He ended his sad post by saying he hopes he’s making her proud.

Skhumba’s Failures

Skhumba wasn’t very intelligent in school and so he couldn’t make it to be what he wanted to be.

He had dreams of becoming a lawyer however, he failed four times before he matriculated thereby dashing those hopes.

He was very naughty and was mostly doing things that made people laugh.

This is probably what laid the foundation for him to become one of SA’s top comedians.

He also flopped on his first attempt at making a debut in comedy when he was to perform at Caprivi in Tembisa but nobody attended the event.

He Worked As A Clerk

Skhumba’s mum worked at a dry cleaner shop and couldn’t afford to send him to the University.

In order to see himself through life, Skhumba got a job at the South African Police Service (SAPC) where he worked as a clerk for 13 years.

Journey Towards Becoming A Top Comedian

Shumba’s journey to being a comedian wasn’t so smooth especially when his first attempt at it failed.

However, this did not deter him as he sought to become better at it and put in work to achieve this present status of being a great comedian.

In order to achieve this, he became a resident comedian at Bambatha Avenue Jazz Café in Centurion where he worked for two years.

While there, he had the opportunity to get better at this art and he made good use of this opportunity.

He was paid R 200.

By the year 2015, Skhumba was already earning R8000 per gig.

This brings his current net worth to an estimate of $2 million.

Skhumba’s Family

Skhumba is happily married and has two beautiful kids with his wife.

He has a girl for the first child and a boy for his second.

Skhumba had a son born to him in 2006 before the present two came along but the boy passed away 9 weeks after being born.

However, with the present two kids, he tries to be the best dad ever and is constantly devoted to them and their needs.

Skhumba And Controversies

The comedian is very controversial and his jokes are mostly unfiltered.

He never minds who his jokes are about or directed to.

He throws jabs and raw jokes at top people in society like politicians.

He once made a ‘faux pas’ when he made a demeaning comment about a group of university girls who protested against an increase in tuition fee, naked.

He received backlashes on social media for his comment and eventually had to apologize and take down the post.

A Charitable Man

In a bid to give back to his community, Skhumba started a charity foundation which he uses as a medium to reach out to the less privileged especially the disabled.

He donates wheelchairs to these disabled individuals to help life a little bearable for them.

He does this as his quota in contributing back to his community.

Skhumba’s Is Also An Actor

Skhumba Hlophe popularly referred to as ‘Big Banger’ isn’t just a comedian and radio presenter, he has also made his mark in the movie industry.

He is best known for his roles in movies like ‘Dlamini’, ‘Thandeka’s Diary’, the feature film ‘Taxi Ride’ and its spin-off series ‘Taxi Ride’.

On the 1st of February, 2021, South Africans were shocked by the news of Skhumba’s death.

News outlets had hit headlines with wrongly captioned news following a post made by Skhumba.

When Skhumba lost his grandmother whom he grew up with, he took to his Instagram to share the devastating news, and captions such as “Death hit Skhumba” began to make headlines thereby confusing Mzanzi.

Skhumba is not dead and the rumors of his demise were carried and spread by news outlets who did not properly caption their story.
