Timothy attended a Sports academy in Zurich where his skills and passion were honed. The academy is named ‘Sports Academy Zurich’ and this is where he completed his education before delving into the world of professional football.

Facts About The 30 Year-old Goalkeeper

1. Beginning of Football For Seny Dieng

Seny Dieng’s dad and mum

The Swiss-born goalkeeper started playing football way back when he was still quite young. He started from playing with clubs in his neighborhood such as Wiedikon, Young Fellows Juventus, and the Red Stars.

An important fact to note is that the goalkeeper also had a football education in Red Stars and the Grasshopper Clubs. In these clubs, Seny had in-depth teachings about football and all it takes. After learning the ropes, he settled to being a goalkeeper while at Red Stars.

Dieng got called up to play for the Grasshoppers at the age of 16 and rapidly went up the ranks. At age 19, he was named the 3rd goalkeeper of the team’s professional squad. He was just behind Roman Burki and Davide Taini.

2. The Goalie Has Been Transferred Out A Couple Of Times

QPR’s goalkeeper has been part of a couple of the club’s teams. He has been transferred out to these teams sometimes even for free. Some of the teams are; FC Grenchen from the Grasshoppers in 2012.

By 2nd February 2016, he was transferred out to MSV Duisburg for free. Haven made no appearances for the club, he also signed with AFC Fylde, a non-league club. From here, he signed another deal with QPR on a free transfer after a short stay at AFC Fylde.

This was not the end of the Senegalese’ transfers though. By the 2018-2019 season, he was loaned out to Stevenage. From the English club, he was again loaned out to Scottish club, Dundee on the 10th January 2019 and he remained here for a while.

26th of July 2019 saw Dieng go on another loan transfer to Doncaster Rovers. This transfer lasted till January 2020.

3. It Took 4 Years For Seny To Make An EPL Debut

Dual citizen holder Dieng moved from playing for Scottish teams to the English teams. This move, he admitted was easy as he preferred being in London. However, making a debut after being signed with the second-tier club took a lot of time.

Seny Dieng remained signed for 4 years in the Championship before playing his first game. He had to be patient and work extra hard in order to earn a place in the field of play.

4. Dieng’s Move To QPR Saved His Career

Following his spells of transfers both on loan and free, after a sad streak in 2016, he left the club. Seny had played with the GC where he had made no on-field appearances but only warmed the bench about 20 times.

From GC, he signed with the second Bundesliga club, Duisburg who ended the season relegated. As a reserve player, he made a move to leave the club for the English third division side, Rochdale which a lot of people thought would have been the end of his career.

However, this was not so as a twist of fate saw him signing with Queens Park Rangers. He was noticed during a warm-up match with Rochdale by a scout and subsequently made a move to QPR instead.

5. When Seny’s Career Kicked-off, There Were Only A Handful Of Black Goalies

While the goalkeeper was growing up, there weren’t a lot of goalkeepers who were black and playing for European clubs. Seeing that a lot of athletes suffer from racial abuses especially when they play, it is a relief that a lot of black players are beginning to pick up the keeper gloves.

Although there were just a handful of goalkeepers, the Swiss-born still had others who he looked up to. He admits to looking up to Steve Mandanda who was a keeper for Marseille and France.

Dieng, says that one’s skin color shouldn’t deter him from being trusted to be a good keeper. He feels that with all the chances given to blacks to be goalkeepers, they are beginning to prove that they can be reliable at the post.

Seny Dieng made his international debut for the Senegal team on the 30th of March 2021 after being called upon. His first appearance was in a match against Eswatini which ended in a draw and saw the Senegal national team qualifying to AFCON 2021.

He was then called upon to join the squad for the African Cup of Nations. His call to be part of the team came after Chelsea’s goalkeeper Edouard Mendy tested positive for Covid 19 and couldn’t make it till he was out from isolation. Alfred Gomis who was also part of the team as a goalie missed a few games because he was out for Covid 19 reasons.

7. Seny Dieng Is A Goalie With A Goal

One of the unique things about a few goalkeepers is having goals. Seeing that their job is basically to man their goalposts, it is quite a rare sight that goalies score goals. The exception to this is actually during penalty shoot-outs.

Seny Dieng, while on loan from QPR to Whitehawk in 2017, scored a goal against Chippenham Town. This game was on the 2nd of December 2017 and the goal came in the 91st minute.
