Owami Mafokate came into the spotlight for being the daughter of Arthur Mafokate and Queen Sesoko the prominent musician couple in South Africa. Away from the shadows of her parents, Owami is a Disk Jockey, singer, dancer, and business enthusiast.

Having started her career as a young teenager, she has since earned her place as one of the best female DJs in her country and has taken the stage at various popular music festivals. Although she took some time off because of her education, she is still making waves and has also released her first album.

The 23 Years Old Was Born Into a Musical Family

Owami Mafokate is the first daughter and second child of Arthur Mafokate and Queen Iyaya’s relationship. She was born Owami Melodee Mafokate on September 20 2001 in South Africa. 

As indicated, both her parents are musical artists. Her father, Arthur Mafokate, is popularly referred to as the King of Kwaito. He began his career in the early 1990s as a backup dancer and musician. Nonetheless, he has since expanded to music production. He is the owner of the music label, 999 Music.

Her mother, Queen Sesoko is not left behind as she is also in the music business where she thrives as an accomplished gospel singer. Previously known as Queen Iyana, she was part of the 999 music as the lead artist of the Kwaito band, Abashante.

1. Owami Made Her Stage Debut At 3

Born into a musical family and been around music all her life, Owmai became convinced of her passion for music when she was a young teenager of 13. However, she first made her debut on stage a decade before then when she was only 3.

She made it known that while there was never a time in her life that she was pressured into following the musical path, her younger days were filled with memories of stage performances with her father.

2. A Look at Her Educational Pursuits

The celebrity kid’s educational pursuits are not as known as her professional pursuits, but it is known that she once attended Beaulieu College. She had her matric exams in 2019 and she reportedly aced it. She took to her Instagram to announce her success while her father also took to the same platform to congratulate her.

3. She Learned Disc Jockey from Her Older Brother

Apart from her parents having careers in music, her brother, Arthur Junior is also a producer and Disc Jockey. She credits him for helping her start with DJ lessons and practice.

Arthur Mafokate Jr. is, amongst other things, a musician, and music producer.  Hence, he has been a light for his younger sister, and thanks to this, the 23 years old is already making waves in the entertainment industry and was crowned the best female DJ at the inaugural SA Amapiano Awards in 2021. She also revealed that she wants to be a producer, editor and own her record label.

4. Owami Mafokate Released her First Music Album on her 20th Birthday

The celebrity DJ made her 20th birthday a memorable one when she released her first music album on the same day. More than going for gigs and shows as a Disc Jockey, Owami decided to follow in her father’s footsteps with the release of her seven-track debut album titled ‘Ready’ on On September 20, 2021.

According to an Interview, Owami said she doesn’t want to be in the shadows of her father’s legacy but wants to be recognized for her name.

5. Owami is the Co-owner of “Hermosa Clothing line”

Asides from being part of the entertainment industry, DJ. Owami is an entrepreneur. The celebrity DJ is the co-owner of the “Hermosa Clothing Line” thanks to her school project. She designs caps, beanies, hoodies, and headbands alongside her friends Hali Lawal and Liza Pezisa.

At the moment, “Hermosa Clothing Line” is already gaining ground in countries like Australia, London, Canada, and the United States. Owami promotes her online business through her social media platform. She also owns a marketing communications business and event management.

Owami was only three when the relationship between her parents came to an end. Since then, she has remained in the care of her father. The entertainer revealed that Arthur plays the role of a father and mother. She acknowledged that he goes out his way to make her happy and comfortable. He accompanies her to the salon, makeup sessions, the red carpet, and other events.

Her father was there when she received her first award as the best female Disc Jockey. On Owami’s 18th birthday, he surprised her with a new R400k Minnie Cooper.

7. Owami’s Father Arthur Mafokate Has Never Been Married

It is no secrete that 62 years old South African musician has never been married in his entire life. Several speculations have been made about his love life and why he chooses to stay unmarried.

Arthur Mafokate has four children from numerous relationships. His first child Junior and Owami Mafokate are products of his fling with Queen Iyaya Sesoko. The kwaito star is also the father of Kelello and Onalenna but their mother’s identity isn’t known.

According to reports, Arthur has been into not less than six relationships including Thulisile Madihlaba also known as Chomee and Busisiwe Cici Thwala. Also, all the women he has been linked with are said to be his employees.

8. Is She In a Relationship?

Owami seems to be more focused on her musical career. At present, she has not been linked with anyone and revealed in an interview that she is single. However, other claims suggest that she isn’t ready to make her relationship known to the public.

9. Owami’s Mother Switched to Gospel Music When She Married Former Boxer Turned Pastor

When Queen Iyaya cut ties with Arthur Mafokate in 2003, she left the 999 music and ventured into other businesses. She reportedly got married to Masibulele Makepula who was a former boxer turned pastor.

The pair got married during the Covid 19 lockdown in a closed ceremony after dating for a few months. She is now referred to as Apostle Queen Sesoko and not the “Kwaito Queen” and reveals plans to return to the music world as a gospel artist.

10. Her Grandfather Is A Famous Sportsman

The grandfather of the DJ, Enos Mafokate is famous in South Africa as a showjumper. He is considered to be the first black South African in the sport after he was taught by a white horse owner. The founder of the Soweto Equestrian Foundation (SEF) riding school, he had a very long career although it was interrupted at some point because of the apartheid regime in South Africa.
