Lonnie Rashid Lynn Jr. popularly known by his stage name ‘Common’ has for a very long time evolved from being a bachelor to a father of an only daughter, Omoye Assata Lynn. Although the album was planned to be released earlier, Common paused with the process for about a year before going back to finish it. The album was released in September 1997.
2. Omoye Assata Lynn Was Named After An American Activist And Tupac Shakur’s Godmother
Assata Shakur, an African-American is an activist and member of the former Black Panther Party (BPP) and Black Liberation Army (BLA). She is also known as the godmother of rapper Tupac Shakur. Although Assata was charged with murder, was convicted, later escaped, has been in exile, and was listed as one of the United States’ FBI Most Wanted Terrorists since 2013; she still gained respect among many black communities for the significant role played towards black people’s liberation movement.
In honour of her, Common named his first and only daughter ‘Assata’ which is a West African name derived from the Arabic Aisha which means “she who struggles”. Furthermore, she was also named ‘Omoye’ – ‘blessed baby’.
3. Common Dedicated His ‘Retrospect For Life’ Single To Her
‘Retrospect For Life’ is the first single from Common’s third album ‘One Day It’ll Make Sense’. In the song, Common pointed out how he and Omoye’s mother almost opted for abortion because they were not ready to start a family. The song featured Lauryn Hill and is one of the most unforgettable of the songs in the album.

Common had dated Kim Jones who birthed Omoye. Their relationship however ended a year after the birth of their daughter in a complicated way. Since then, not much has been heard of her.
