Joshua Bee Alafia is a film director and cinematographer who has become known for his works such as The Seed (2010) and Se Safando (2012). In his personal life, he gained attention between 2012 and 2014 for his marriage to Yaya DaCosta and their subsequent divorce. They were once believed to be a perfect couple that was cut for each other, hence many years after their divorce, questions still remain regarding what actually happened between them.
Who Is Joshua Bee Alafia?
Joshua is not the most famous individual out there since he is not a regular celebrity of any sort. However, he is known thanks to his marriage to DaCosta on one hand, and also for his carer as a cinematographer. While there is no information regarding how and when he was born and brought up, it is revealed that he started his career as a filmmaker in his high school days.
With a strong passion for art, he attended the University of California from where he graduated in 1995 with a BA in Film. He also went to the Spirit Rock Meditation Center where he was a graduate of the Community Dharma Leaders training.
After his graduation from the University, he took to freelancing as a cinematographer and has come to work with big names including Luciano, Bikram Singh, King David, and also 77 Klash for whom he has shot music videos. He has also worked on numerous documentaries including Every Day Art in Cuba and We Just Tellin’ Stories: Rodessa Jones’ Medea Project.
He has gained fame as a meditator, something that he was said to have started in 1989 after he received a mantra to work with from his mother.
His relationship with Yaya DaCosta And Their Marriage
Details surrounding how Joshua Bee Alafia and Yaya met are still not known to the public. However, there are reports that they got married in 2012 in an outdoor ceremony in Pennsylvania. The union was blessed with a son, Sankara Alafia who was born in September 2013.
Yaya is an actress and model whose fame was thanks to her appearance on the Next American Top Model in Season 3 in 2004. She was the first runner-up. Rather than pursue a career as a model after the show, she switched to acting and was able to build a name for herself in that regard. She appeared in works such as Take the Lead (2006), Honeydripper (2007), The Messenger Monica Washington (2009), The Kids Are All Right (2010), Tron: Legacy (2010), and Whitney (2015).
With that said, she met and got married to her husband after her career as an actress had already started and it was also already taking good shape.
Unfortunately, the marriage was not meant to last forever as only two years down the line and a kid between them, Yaya reportedly filed for a divorce, leading to the end of the marriage.
The Reasons Why They Divorced
At the time of the divorce, neither of the two came out to state why the marriage came to an end. However, the actress later revealed that she was never divorced as she had never been married to Joshua. Many found the statement rather shocking because Page Six once reported that she filed for divorce in Manhattan Supreme Court although the filing was sealed so that the reason behind the divorce was not known. More so, the publication revealed that the divorce could get nasty.
According to her, she broke up from her former partner because of an enlightening experience shortly after the birth of their son. The birth changed her in many ways and she became an entirely new person from who she was. This is believed to be the reason why the pair split.
Amidst all these, Joshua Alafia has not made any public statement on whether they were ever married or when they parted ways.

Where Are They Today?
Even though they are no longer together, both the filmmaker and Yaya are very much involved in the life of their son. The actress revealed that even though she is no longer with her ex, there is no reason why he shouldn’t be a part of his son’s life because she believes every child should have a father in his life.
Neither of them has gotten married a second time and they keep their private life away from the public domain.
It is known, however, that apart from raising their son, Sankara Alafia, they are both giving their time to their separate career lives
