Jamila Davis had her name on the headlines after her involvement in a top-level fraud case. The author, television personality, and motivational speaker fell on the wrong side of the law.

She found purpose in prison and is a frontline prison reform activist. She is still one of the faces that encouraging at-risk youths to stay away from crime.

While Jamila has seen the lowest point of life, her experiences have become the central point of her life’s work. She draws inspiration to help others heal and live normal lives again.

Jamila Davis was born on 11 July 1977 in Jamaica, Queens, New York. She attended Lincoln University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She is a proud mother to two adorable children, Kywuan Terrel Warren, and Diamond Baker. Jamila is currently  47 years old.

She found herself in the FBI net after a multi-million dollar bank fraud. District attorney Chris Chritgieprosecuted her in 2008. At the time of her incarceration, her children were still very young and she missed a decade of their lives.

Her mother was a school teacher and is currently her publisher.

Prison helped her refocused her energy into giving more to life. As part of the process, she wrote some of her books while behind bars. The Price I had To Pay and the Voice of Consequences Enrichment series detail her experiences.

Is She Still In Prison?

With a looming sentence of 12 ½, reality dawned on her. Her part in the bank fraud stripped her of her possessions. Moreso, her sentencing was the longest making it look like an unfair judgment since they all committed the crime.

The jury found her guilty of the charges. She got her prison at the age of 31. Jamila spent 9 nine of her sentence before she regained her freedom.

If there is anything she has picked from prison, it is the desire of never wanting to go back there.

1. Jamila Davis Became A Millionaire At 25

Jamila employed her street smartness and business savvy to build a business empire. Through real estate investments, Jamila made her millions at 25.

The idea of going into business came from her heartbreak after her first love left her for a girl that had her won money.

Knowing the right hip hop cliques and celebrities made her a go-to person.

2. Why Was She Imprisoned?

Jamila Davis got into prison for a bank fraud scheme of $14 million against Lehman Brothers Bank. The scheme involved heavy lending to secure properties and make a huge gain. This practice was not uncommon in the early 90s.

Jamila made her way to the top through many shortcuts. She took these shortcuts to make the money flow easier.

She never saw her empire crashing while on her way to prison. The insatiable thirst for more was the end of her.

While Jamila was one of several others who connived to defraud Lehman Brothers, her rap was more. In fact, she was another little fish in Lehman’s history of bank loans losses.

3. Jamila Davis Found Purpose While In Prison

Jamila saw prison first hand and chose to change her course of life. She has made it her life’s work to reach out to incarcerated prisoners especially females.

The prison was not her destination when she started out as a businesswoman, it taught her life’s lessons. She has taken her lessons and is spreading the message for people to avoid a life of crime.

4. Her Son Started The Kywuan Terrel Outerwear Collection

It is beginning to look as if Jamila and her son share a gene for business. Jamila turned her crime into a media empire and now her son is making a name for himself in the business world.

He was 11 when his mother went to prison but the story has turned around. Kywuan first brought the clothing line idea to his mom while on a visit to her in prison.

The designs targeted mem as the market. Jamila hand-crotched the designs her son created. This continued till they had a clothing line ready.
The story of the Kywuan Terrel Outerwear collection goes back to his mom’s prison time.

Celebrities like Ne-Yo, Jason Terrel, James Hardin, Carmello Anthony, and NBA Ballers patronized his brand at some points.

5. How Her Children Went To School

Kywuan was devastated when his mother went to prison. His admission into a major university did not pass through as he could not afford the tuition. This minor setback did not stop him from pursuing his dreams. He made the honor roll at a local community college.

The last time Jamila went to her daughter, Diamond’s graduation was at kindergarten. This is one of her great regrets in life but she is not wasting any more time now that she is out. Jamila was happy when Diamond maintained a GP of 4.0. Diamond graduated from North Caroline A&T University in North Caroline.

Currently, the bestselling author has six books to her name. the most popular being the Voices Of Consequences Enrichment series.

Her books are influenced by her experiences in prison. While the content aims at incarcerated women, it is a good read for every other person.

7. Jamila Davis Obtained Her Doctorate Degree After Leaving Prison

Prison gave Jamila a new focus for her energy, she was not discouraged by the condition she found there. She pursued her doctorate degree with a specialization in Christian Life Coaching. Her Ph.D. was from Newburg Theological Seminary and College of Bible.

Aside from her doctorate degree, she has over 6 other degrees.
