Khuzani Mpungose is a talented musician with a massive following of loyal fans in Mzansi. He is one of the biggest names in the Maskandi community. The Nkandla native decided to pursue a career in music as a teenager.
In his early days, he was influenced by the music of Mgqumeni which made him choose the Maskandi genre. The singer became famous after another Maskandi artist Mgumeni Khumalo passed away and he had to complete his album because they had the same voice.

However, Mpungose’s manager Mthokozisi Zuma revealed that Buthelezi was the first to approach them with the show concept but they later decided to work with Manquele because Buthelezi had failed to meet the deadlines they had given him to produce it.

1. Khuzani Mpungose is a native of KwaZulu-Natal
Khuzani was born in Nkandla, north of KwaZulu-Natal on December 3, 1989, to his parents, Muziwephahla Mpungose and Sizakele Mpungose. His birth name is Khuzani Nkosikhona Innocent Mpungose. He is the second out of his parents’ three children.
2. Khuzani Mpungose started schooling in 1995
In 1995, the singer began schooling at Mvayiza Primary School in Mandaba village in Nklandla. He left the school in 1999 and attended Sibhakabhaka Primary & High School until 2002.
He completed his matric at Sibhakabhaka in 2009.

Khunzani Mpungose is currently regarded as Inkosi kaMaskandi ‘the king of Maskandi’ by many of his fans. He began to gain prominence when he was 20 years old.
He released his debut album titled Bahlueke Bonke. The following year, he released another album and it was titled Amampunge.
4. Mpungose’s biggest rival is Igcokama Elisha
The South African singer’s biggest rival in the industry is Igcokama Elisha. Elisha is one of the most popular South African musicians in the Maskandi music scene.
Their rivalry has resulted in violent confrontations between fans. In 2017, Bongiwe Sithole-Moloi tried to make peace between the artists. The meeting was organized by Sithole-Moloi and the two artists agreed to resolve their differences. They also stated that they would no longer use sarcastic and defamatory content in their songs.
5. Khuzani made history after his song became the song of the year
After Khuzani accumulated over 900,000 votes from Ukhozi FM listeners for the song of the year. The song became the biggest song in the country that year.
Also, his music was liked because he reportedly emulated the style of Khumalo who passed at the age of 27.
Khuzani’s fans refer to themselves as Blue Nation. Each time he’s performing, they would wear blue colours.
6. He reached out to Khulekani’s family
Being a Maskandi musician, he grew up listening to Khulekani. The latter inspired him while growing up so he decided to reach Khulekani’s family during the festive season.
Khuzani visited Khulekani’s gogo and gave her R10,000 for Christmas. The gogo was very grateful and revealed she was actually going through a tough time.
7. Khuzani is the first Maskandi artist to get a reality show
Mpungose is said to be the first traditional musician to have his own reality TV show aired. Khuzani encouraged his fans to watch the show when it premieres on SABC1. The show is entitled Khuzani Boh.
