Raised in Addis Ababa, the five sisters, Tirunesh, Genzebe, Anna, Melat, and Ejegayehu are recognized as the World’s Most decorated Athletics Family. The girls are not the only athletes in their family, the first black African woman to win an Olympic gold medal in the 1992 games, Derartu Tulu is their cousin.

1. The Dibaba Sisters were Raised on a Farm by their Parents
The Dibaba Sisters reportedly had humble beginnings. They were raised by peasant parents who were barley and wheat farmers in a round hut without any basic social amenities in the southern area of Bekoji before the family later moved to Addis Ababa.
The athletes come from relatively large families. While Vogue says there are seven of the Dibaba siblings, other sources claim they are six. According to reports, the siblings possess an athletic DNA as they are all runners. They have been often compared to Serena Williams and Venus Williams but in their case, they are more in number.
Aside from the girls, Dejene their brother is said to be marked as a future star as well. The Dibaba family is of Oromo descent.

According to the athlete’s mother Gutu, her daughters’ success should be credited to the loving and steady environment they were raised. She also revealed that her daughters had a healthy diet and a steady supply of milk from the family livestock.

During Ethiopia’s millennium celebrations in 2008, Tirunesh Dibaba tied the knot with silver medalist Sileshi Sihine in a spectacular two-week-long wedding ceremony. The wedding marked the first of its kind between athletes.
After the wedding, Ejegayuhu hosted the couple and their guests in her magnificent home. The athletes welcomed their first child, Nathan in March 2015, and in January 2020, Tirunesh announced the birth of their second child via Instagram. The third member of the family, Matti was born in February 2022.

4. Tirunesh Dibaba is Said to be the Most Decorated of all the Sisters
At the age of 18, Tirunesh became the youngest World Champion and also one of only two women who have ever won the short and long course World Cross Country title. The 39-year-old long-distance athlete has won three Olympic track gold medals, five championship track gold medals, and four individual World Cross Country adult titles. She was also the 5000 meters world record holder.
Tirunesh’s older sister Ejegayuhu, 42, has also won a silver medal in the 10,000 meters while Genzebe, 33 holds the world record for 1500 meters, 2000 meters and indoor world records for 1500 meters.
Tirunesh and Genzebe are the only siblings in history to hold concurrent world records.

The Ethiopian sisters have been quite successful in the sports world. They have in turn invested in several sectors in their communities. The Dibaba Sisters are real estate moguls. They own quite a number of properties and buildings in Addis Ababa.
One of the sisters, Tirnuesh established a three-star hotel in 2013. The designing and architectural design were estimated to be around $1.8 million.
