The safest countries in Africa record low in terms of violent crimes like killings, public unrest, political instability, armed conflict, and disputes with nearby neighbors. Africa the 2nd largest continent in the world is renowned for many things, but always dicey low with safety and security; some are pleasing, while some are not.

Africa is blessed with some of the amazing natural endowments of the world like beautiful beaches, undulating mountains, and hills, rivers, and valleys.

However, safety and security have given the continent a negative coloration among its pairs in the world. It is on good record that there are countries in Africa that ranked even better than their counterparts from other continents of the world.

Procedures For Selecting The Safest Countries In Africa

The following criteria were used in considering these countries as the safest in Africa. They are:

  1. Insignificant frequencies of terrorist acts and violent demonstrations
  2. Low crime rate
  3. Political Stability
  4. Internal Peace
  5. Good foreign relations with neighboring countries

It is from these points of procedures that the following African countries are deemed the safest in the black continent.

It is in this light that a list of some of the safest countries in Africa is presented. These countries were thoroughly selected because of their high ratings in the Global Peace Index (GPI), and low level of crime and violence.

This is because if there is peace and security, the lives and properties of the people are guaranteed. And once these are guaranteed, then a City, State, or Country is considered safe.

1. Mauritius

An island that lies close to the Indian Ocean is the number one safest country in Africa. It also ranks as the most peaceful country in Africa and 26th globally, scoring 1.544 on GPI. The tiny island nation with an estimated population of 1.2 million people is one of the most cherished tourist heavens in Africa.

It is reported that crime is almost non-existent, especially towards visitors and tourists.

2. Botswana

A non-coastal country in the southern part of Africa is blessed with abundant natural and physical endowments ranging from valleys, rivers, and wildlife. It is the 2nd most peaceful country in Africa and 30th globally. It scored 1.679 on the global peace index (GPI).

The country’s Kalahari Desert and Okavango delta make it a prime tourist destination in Africa, attracting millions of tourists annually. However, with the influx of tourists from all over the world, the country’s crime and violence rates are low.

3. Ghana

Ghana sometimes referred to as the land of Gold is geographically in the western part of Africa. It is one of the safest countries in Africa according to its GPI score of 1.796. The country is not tourism-rich, but it is blessed with a rich cultural heritage and history.

The people of Ghana are hospitable and warm, so they welcome everybody.

4. Zambia

A country that lies at the center of Southern Africa is one of the safest countries in the African continent. It scored 1.805 on the Global Peace Index (GPI), as one of the peaceful countries in Africa. It was a graded level one by the US Department of State for traveler safety, meaning it is very safe for tourists to visit the country.

Yearly, the country attracts millions of tourists to the country because of its rich tourism potentials like the Victoria Falls, Kafue National Park, and the lower-Zambezi National Park.

5. Malawi

This landlocked country is also one of the safest countries in Africa. Tourists visit the country because of its natural wildlife. Wanting an experience of the wild, visit Malawi where you’d get to see the famous big 5 in Manjet National Park, but ensure not to get caught up in isolated areas.

6. Sierra Leone

Many people would wonder why this country is listed here knowing its history of violence in the 90s. However, the country has turned away that negative history. It is now one of the safest countries on the African continent.

7. Tanzania

It is in the Eastern part of Africa and renowned for its massive wilderness areas. Tanzania is one of the safest countries in Africa which attracts millions of tourists annually. This is because of the mountain Kilimanjaro, the tallest mountain in Africa, many national parks, and Zanzibar island.

8. Madagascar

Madagascar is a popular tourist destination and also the 2nd largest island in the world. It is also safe to travel or be in the island country.

Just in case you want to see the different species of plants and animals on this planet, the East African country is your destination. It records low in crime and violence.

9. Senegal

Senegal stands out among other Africa countries as the most stable concerning politics. Its people are hospitable and welcoming. Since there has been no violent unrest in recent times, the country is rated as one of the peaceful countries in Africa according to the Global Peace Index (GPI) score.

10. Liberia

Found on the coast of West Africa, Liberia is one of the safest countries in Africa. The country has a flourishing culture that people travel from different parts of the world to experience and appreciate.
