God’s Window has glorious views, canyons, rock formations, and waterfalls. Its breathtaking scenic beauty gives the Heaven on Earth kind of feeling. It is made up of indigenous forest-clad ravine, majestic cliffs, and private game reserves. This natural beauty contributed to making Mpumalanga a tourist heaven and one of South Africa’s major wildlife destinations.

From the beginning of time, God created the World perfectly, showing His architectural ingenuity through the formation of high mountain tops and rock formations, beautiful blue oceans, and seas, green vegetation, fertile lands, the blue sky, waterfalls, and man. We can find some of these wonderful acts of creation on the Drakensberg escarpment in Mpumalanga, South Africa.

1. One Scene From The 1980s The God’s Must Be Crazy film was shot in God’s Window

The edge of the earth scene from the popular South Africa comedy film The God’s Must Be Crazy was filmed in the former Eastern Transvaal, South Africa, now Mpumalanga. The scene shows Xi, the protagonist, arriving at the top of the cliff in God’s Window, believing he has reached the ends of the earth, tosses a bottle off the cliff, and dashed off to his family.

2. You Can Glimpse Mozambique From The Mountain

On a wonderful day with the sun glowing, you can catch a view of the famous Kruger National Park which lies near the Lebombo Mountains on South Africa’s border with Mozambique.

3. It Takes 2 Hours To Travel From God’s Window To Blyde River Canyon 

For tourists wanting to explore more beautiful gifts of nature that lies in Mpumalanga, South Africa, it takes not less than 2 hours 22 minutes by car to get to the Blyde River Canyon, also known as the green canyon which is the third-largest canyon in the world, after the Grand Canyon in Arizona, US and Namibia’s Fish River Canyon.

4. Its Temperature Is Low

Because of its high altitude, the climatic conditions on the mountain is outrightly dissimilar from that of the Lowveld. The temperature is usually low, making the ridge to be always covered with thick fog. It is often cold up there.

5. Fog Can Cover The Entire Ridge For Several Days

According to a feasibility study carried out on the mountain, the massive fog covering the hill can last for about 15 percent of days annually, which is approximately 4 days per year.

6. It Takes Just 10 Rand To Have A Glimpse 

It doesn’t cost much to see the magnificent view of this spectacular display of nature. 10 Rands is enough to catch a glimpse. But, it requires a higher fee for foreign tourists who would definitely pay for accommodation and feeding.

7. God’s Window Has High Altitude

This nature’s wonder in Mpumalanga has a high elevation above sea level, with an altitude of 1,829m, which is about 6000ft off the ground. Standing at the crest of the ridge can send cold shivers in the spine.

8. The expanse Of Land Covering God’s Window is 250km Long

With undulating hills and several thick forests, God’s Window is a stretch of a 250km long gorge of unalloyed beauty and elegance.

9. Why It Is Called God’s Window 

The panoramic view of God’s Window reveals its cliffs plunging above 700 meters to the Lowveld, with forests, which makes it likened to the garden of Eden in the Bible. Anaesthetic beauty such as this can’t be anything less than God’s Window.

10. It Is Protected

God’s window is among the areas clearly mapped and marked out as part of the Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve. The reserve was established in 1965 to protect the Blyde River Canyon, Ohrigstad, Blyde Rivers, and Bourke’s Luck Potholes, and areas that extended to God’s Window.

11. It Has The Highest Viewpoint in Graskop

Its altitude of 1,829m above sea level makes God’s Window the ridge with the highest viewpoint in the entire area north of Graskop. Graskop’s origin can be traced back to the  1880s era of the gold rush in South Africa, initially a mining camp, but now tourist heaven.

12. There are Other Attractions Close To It

Asides from appreciating the beautiful scenery of God’s Window, there are other attractions that lie close, such as, Blyde River Sport Hiking Trail, Three Rondavels, and Wonder Views among others.
