Bongu Zungu is one of the celebrated South African soccer players who has reached career milestones playing in the midfield position for Mamelodi Sundowns and the South African National Team. The player has enjoyed a successful career since he made his professional debut in 2012. He has scored more than 28 goals for the Bafana Bafana national team and at the rate he is going, he is likely going to set more records. Aside from this, he is dating Cindy Mahlangu with whom he shares a son.

With all that is going on in his life, Zungu manages to draw attention to himself with controversies. Here is all we found out about him.

The Early Life and Background of Bongu Zungu

Bongu Zungu is currently 31 years old and we know this because he was born on October 9, 1992, in Duduza, South Africa. Though the identities of his family members are not known, the player has shared pictures of his mother and younger brother on his Instagram account.

The Midfielder Launched his Professional Career in 2012

The Duduza native started playing in the youth level of Dynamos in 2010 when he was 18. He played for two years before making the decision to go professional by playing at a competitive level.

Zungu started playing professionally in 2012 when he joined the University of Pretoria from his youth club, Dynamos. In his debut campaign, he helped AmaTuks to the top 8 position after securing 7 goals for the team in 25 appearances. Apparently, he played so well that the club swapped him to the Mamelodi Sundowns at the beginning of 2013. He was swapped with Buhle Mkhwanzi and Siyabonga Ngubane.

While there was much expectation regarding his skills at the club, this was cut short when he suffered a hairline fracture of the shin in a match against Maritzburg United in the 2015-2016 season. Howbeit the match ended in a 3-2 win for his team, Zungu’s injury took him out for most of the season. Thankfully, the club was able to lift the PSL title in May of 2016.

Following the end of his campaign with Sundowns, he moved to the Portuguese team Vitoria de Guimaraes but his stay with the club lasted for only a season. Following this, he signed a five-year contract with the French team Amiens. While still with the club, he was loaned out to Rangers for a season.

After his contract ended, he moved back to Mamelodi Sundowns in 2022.

He has also Played for the South African National Team

Considering his career rise playing at club level in Europe and South Africa, he made his international debut for the South African National team in 2013. He made his debut on August 17, 2013, in a match against Burkina Faso. However, it was in November of that same year that he scored his first international goal. He netted 1 out of the three goals that sealed the Bafana Bafana win over Swaziland.

Since his international debut over a decade ago, Zungu has made 30 appearances for the team as of filing this report and netted 5 goals for the team.

He is Dating Cindy Mahlangu and They Have A Son Together

While the player who wears Jersey No. 8 for the Mamelodi Sundowns has managed to hold the attention of many with his playing skills on the pitch, his romantic affair with Cindy Mahlangu is another interesting detail. The pair became the center of gossip blogs when they publicized their relationship as far back as 2020. On the one hand, there are fans who are captivated by the power relationship between a top soccer player and a well-known actress, there are those who are not in support. Those who are against the relationship feel that his involvement with the actress has affected his skills as he is prioritizing the relationship over his career.

Regardless of how people feel about their relationship, Zungu and Mahlangu hold no stone unturned when it comes to sharing their loved-up pictures on social media. More on their relationship, the midfielder and Mahlangu share a son together.

Prior, the soccer player dated Khanyi Cele, and went as far as getting engaged. But things did not work between the two and they parted ways. Moving on, news of the pregnancy was first made known by celebrity blogger, Musa Khuvalu in 2022. Apparently, the blogger’s claims were true and this was proven when the footballer and actress celebrated their son’s birthday on March 7, 2023. Based on this, we would not be wrong to say he is years old at the moment.

Apart from this, they have managed to keep his identity hidden by hiding his face and generally not mentioning his name. From available information, Zungu’s son is 2.

How Rich is the South African Player?

Bongani Zungu has an estimated net worth of $4 million which he made from his soccer career. The midfielder has been actively playing for over a decade and since then, he made an impressive amount to show for it. He was once speculated to be among the highest-paid players in Sundowns with a weekly wage of $3000. However, Zungu has since increased this amount with moves to teams like Vitoria where he earned $6000 per week.

Aside from his contracts and salary, Zungu also takes cash to the bank from endorsement deals. Based on his social media updates, he endorses brands like Puma and Nivea. From his online activities, Zungu loves to spend his earnings on cars, fancy spots, and property.

    Emmanuel Tagoe
    Emmanuel Tagoe

He was born Emmanuel Tagoe on January 10, 1989, in his native Accra. Known by the nickname The Gameboy, he has moved from being an unknown to becoming one of the fearsome challengers in the ring. Details about his childhood and family are shrouded in mystery.

Tagoe came to the world of boxing with only the knowledge and experience of street fighting to his tab.

Emmanuel Tagoe Launched His Career In Accra, Ghana

The boxer launched his professional career on June 19 2004 when he was only 15 years old. The Accra-held bout that introduced his career faced him off with Lante Addy who won Tagoe in the fifth round by Technical Knockout.

At the time he was thrust into the ring, Tagoe had no boxing experience. Despite failing to win his debut match, he has won 32 fights in close to two decades of fighting. The Gameboy’s defeat pushed him to polish and learn boxing style as well as train with real coaches.

Thankfully, he made it to many Ghanaian and African Title matches where he retained a winning streak of 21 consecutive matches. Nine years later he made his US debut in a match against Gerardo Robles in August 2013. He won the vacant IBF Intercontinental super-featherweight title following a round 9 technical knockout against Roble.

His most recent match in April 2022 against Ryan Garcia ended in a Unanimous win against him.

Did You Know These elusive Facts About Emmanuel Tagoe?

    1. He is yet to Win A World Championship

Despite fighting some of the stiffest contenders, the 35-year-old is yet to hold a major belt from one of the four major governing bodies. So far, he won titles in three out of the four major boxing bodies the IBF, WBO, and WBA.

As of now, the boxer has a long way to go after losing to Garcia in his last match.

It is stipulated that Tagoe’s fight with Garcia who had suffered a long layoff had a fight purse of $3 million. As per the reports, Garcia who has a high following on social media platforms such as Twitter, TikTok, and Instagram will get 70% of the pay per view while Tagoe would earn 30%.

While the disparity in their earnings is wide, Tagoe got paid $200 thousand despite losing the fight.

    3. Coach Javiel Centeno trains the Accra-born and bred Boxer

For the past four years, Tagoe gets his training from celebrated Florida-based coach, Javiel Centeno founder of the Centeno sweatbox boxing gym. Centeno backed Tagoe in his April faceoff with Garcia. He has been the head trainer for The Game for the past four years.

Unlike Tagoe’s loss, Centeno was lucky with some of his trainees like George Kambosos Jr who stunned Teofima Lopez in 2021 and faced off with Devin Haney in a controversial match in June 2022.

As of this writing, Kambosos who is a sparring partner with Tagoe during training sessions will meet again with Haney in the later part of 2022. Kambosos, the Australian professional boxer has won three titles across four major boxing divisions. He won the WBA, IBF, WBO, and The Ring lightweight titles between 2021 and 2022.

    4. A DNA Result Proved he is not the Father of his 14-year-old son

Tagoe has enjoyed wide acclaim in Ghana before making it to the International ranks. Besides his boxing career, he was the center of a paternity scandal when he discovered that his then 14-year-old son was not his.  As the story goes, he revealed to Saddick Adams that he and a childhood friend, Diana Otoo were experimenting with sex at a young age and when she got pregnant, his mother insisted he takes responsibility.

However, things changed when the baby mama and her family started making impossible demands of him. In fact, she was said to have forced him to send the boy to high-cost schools attended by footballers such as Asamoah Gyan despite paying monthly upkeep of GH₵ 500.

His suspicion led to a DNA test that proved he was not the child’s father. He revealed that he will not sue for damages nor will he take back the things he gave to the child.

    5. The IBF Lightweight Champion Plans to Become a Pastor

While many sporting events are said to have a life span, many athletes are not upfront about what they will do after the end of their careers. Going by statistics most boxers reach their prime in their early to mid-thirties.

Tagoe started hatching his plans a long time ago. According to him, he plans to become a pastor after he leaves boxing. He also revealed that he will not allow any of his children to do the sports since he claims ‘all boxers have mental problems’.

While he made this startling revelation back in 2016 at a time when he had started becoming a household name, it doesn’t take the fact that he thinks highly of himself.

    1. Who is he?

He was born Romain Ghanem Paul Saiss on the 26th March 1990 in Bourg-de-Peage, France to a Moroccan father and a French mother. His father, Radouane Saiss is a restaurant owner. He is not the only child of his parents as he has a young brother.

The 34 year-old started playing football early, but it was on a non-professional level. His breakthrough came when he was in his mid-twenties with Clermont and Le Havre.

In the beginning, he didn’t see himself making it in football because of his age, but when destiny called, he answered. And has established himself as a fine midfielder and defender.

    2. His father is a former footballer

Football runs in the Saiss’ family. It started with his father who played at the amateur level in France with Esperance Hostunoise. And later went on to play for a regional team called Olympique de Valence.

Now, the French-born Moroccan footballer is following in his father’s footsteps and doing better than his father ever was. And just like his father, he played for Valence.

    3. His club career started with a French fifth-tier side

The Moroccan captain began his football journey in the French fifth-tier league, commonly known as National 3 with Olympique de Valence. While playing with the club, he was discovered by Sebastien Regache who had been watching him for several months.

Regache went on to recommend him to Saissto Jean-Noel Cabezas, the manager of the Clermont Foot reserve team. In 2011, the Moroccan joined the reserve team.

    4. When did he sign his first professional contract?

Following an impressive performance with the Clermont Foot reserve team, Saiss started training the club’s first team in October 2011. In January 2012, after training with the first team for almost three months, coach Michel Der Zakarian offered him a professional contract barely two months to his 22nd birthday.

Chair developed a passion for football at a young age, but it never occurred to him he would make a career out of it. Uncertain of what lies ahead for him in a Belgian city known for crime, his family, football, and God were his inspiration.

This inspiration guided him to pursue a career in football which kicks off at the Club Brugge and JMG Academy in Belgium, but he failed to pass through Club Brugge’s grade system. The opportunity to play professionally came when Lierse gave him the chance at 17. When he turned 19, QPR signed him after he impressed the club during his trial period. He has passed through the club’s development system to one of the finest player-makers at the club.

Below is everything you need to know about him.

A year later, his mother gave birth to twins boys before welcoming two other boys subsequently.

Sekou Keita and Miriam Camara welcome Naby Keita on the 10th February 1995. He has a younger brother named Petit Keita who is also pursuing a dream career in football, and as of 2018, reports say he was training at Liverpool’s Academy but is yet to be given a contract.

Keita’s interest in football started while he was still walking on all fours. His mother attested to this saying, her son would dribble and kick anything that falls off the table, from a water table to an orange. These seem to amuse him.

Though he was passionate about football, his parents wanted him to get an education. That didn’t resonate well with him, as he found it hard to reconcile the two. Therefore, his education suffered a setback, but what he failed to achieve in school, he did with football.

This strong desire to follow his football dream paid off, although he went through some difficulties. The challenges he encountered along the way helped his career progression from playing in France to Austria, Germany, and England with clubs like FC Istres, Red Bull Salzburg, Leipzig, and Liverpool.

    1. At 12, local scouts told him that his football abilities would open European door

Guinea’s central midfielder started his football journey with a local Guinean club, Horoya. While at the club, he wore the number 10 jersey and plays without football boots. Sometimes, he uses sandals or old shoes.

Interestingly, he was just 12 when local scouts told him that his talents and skills could attract interest from European clubs. But, his only reach to Europe was watching Ligue 1, Champions League, and EPL matches from the viewing centers.

    2. French scouts discovered him at 16

Uncertainty filled Keita’s mind, not knowing what comes next, but the eagerness to reach Europe kept him floating. So, a miracle happened, some scouts from a French football academy visited Guinea, and he was invited for a trial.

He was successful and made the journey to France, though the academy didn’t offer him any professional contract, he nor his family took it to heart. His family just wanted him to follow his dreams.

On reaching France, his expectations were dashed, as life there became difficult. He was in a different country with different people and cultures, except for the language. He struggled to adapt to the environment.

    3. He suffered rejection in France

France was the starting point of Keita’s professional football career, but, it didn’t start on a positive note. Apart from the challenge of adapting to a new environment, his teammates at the academy were not friendly, and he suffered rejection, reports say.

Similarly, he didn’t understand the professional tactics used by his coach at the academy. All he knows about football was from the streets of Conakry in Guinea. As a result, he became an object of mockery to his teammates. Because of this, Keita was always traveling back and forth between his country and France.

The Guinean central midfielder lost his conviction to play football. He thought if he would ever go through with it. There his dream lies within a touching distance, but it is falling through.

The only choice he had was to find ways of reconciling what he learned at home and what he is learning in Europe.

    4. How FC Istres gained the midfielder

After the central midfielder reconciled his knowledge of African and European football together, he immediately transitioned into a vibrant offensive and defensive player for his French academy club. It took a little time before bigger clubs started knocking on the doors of his academy for him.

Initially, Le Mans was the first club to discover his potential and wanted to sign him at 18, but they couldn’t because they were going broke. It was FC Istres that finally signed him following a recommendation to the club’s sporting director.

FC Istres tried to keep him but bigger offers they couldn’t turn down kept coming. So, the club let him go.

    5. He first met Sadio Mane at Red Bull Salzburg

Keita first crossed paths with his Liverpool teammate, Sadio Mane at Red Bull Salzburg. Mane joined the Austrian club three years before the arrival of the Guinean central midfielder. After arriving at the club, he met stiff competition, but it was Mane who helped him to settle down. That’s how their friendship began before the Senegalese captain left Keita behind to join Southampton in England.

Subsequently, many offers came from other clubs, and the Guinean joined the German side, RB Leipzig. While at the club, he formed a friendship with Chelsea’s Timo Werner.

Mane who left Southampton reportedly made the former Salzburg player’s move to Anfield possible and joined Liverpool. He convinced Jürgen Klopp about his friend, and the coach agreed to bring him to Liverpool.

    6. Keita was involved in driver’s license falsification

Sometimes in September 2017, the Guinean central midfielder was involved in a document falsification as reported by the German media. The story revolves around his fake driver’s license, how he traveled to Guinea to prepare it, and his intentions to use it to get another one in Germany.

His plan was foiled through the combined efforts of officials from Guinea and Germany. He was charged to pay 415, 000 Euros by a district court in Leipzig. The sentence was based on his net income of nearly 3 million euros annually.

However, his defence attorneys filed an appeal order, which led to a reduced fine of 250, 000 euros (220, 000 pounds).

    7. How he was nicknamed ‘Deco’

The name Deco was forged out of his father’s and friends’ judgment who thought he played like the former Chelsea and Barca player. According to him, he wanted to be Deco, Titi Camara, or Pascal Feindouno when he was growing up.

    8. He debuted for the National Elephants of Guinea in 2012

The central midfielder made his first international appearance in Guinea’s colors on 14th December 2012 in a 2014 African Nations Championship qualification against Sierra Leone. He netted his side’s only goal as the match ended 1-1.

The following year, he was included in Guinea’s 23 man-squad for the 2015 AFCON in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea. Ivory Coast’s Gervinho got sent away for the unruly behavior of trucking him in the face during their group opening encounter in the tournament.

Three years after debuting for his senior national team, he got his first international goal in the first leg of the 2nd round of the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualification against Namibia on 12th November 2015. He scored again during the second leg encounter which ended 2-0 in Morocco.

He made his debut for the Ivorians in a 2-1 victory over Madagascar in the 2021 AFCON qualifiers.
