He became increasingly well-known in 1987 after his first triple platinum record, particularly with songs like We Miss You Manelo, which referenced Nelson Mandela and the quest for freedom. Mandela was still a prisoner on Robben Island at the time the song was released.

In addition, Brenda Fassie’s song Too Late for Mama (1989), which was produced by Twala, went platinum. This success further increased Twala’s popularity.”

In 1992, Chicco’s soul song Peace Song added to the musician’s fame. Moreover, it was produced shortly before the first democratic elections in South Africa, and this made it a sensation. Additionally, he co-wrote the popular song Papa Stop the War in 1990 alongside poet Mzwakhe Mbuli.

According to Twala, his ex-wife cheated on him during their marriage, and that is the reason why they went their separate ways.

Bandman attended Maple from kindergarten until 5th grade. Though his other schools are not public knowledge yet, he was still a dedicated student as at when his fame rose and began to spread.

The COVID-19 pandemic was the era that saw a lot of talents unveil and people found widespread fame. Bandmanrill is one of such people who utilized the unfortunate period to his advantage.

When schools were on break and he couldn’t continue with his other outdoor activities, the New Jersey rapper took to social media. He joined trends and challenges and soon began to amass a legion of followers.

One thing that made him stand out was the fact that for his trends, he jumped on high, upbeat, club sounds. Soon, many people on TikTok knew and associated what is now known as the Jersey Club sound, with him. Even though there were others who had jumped on the same trend before the Newark rapper, he was the one successful enough to make it a hit.

It would interest you to know that before music and the Jersey Club sound fame, Sirill spent a great deal of his time trying out his comedy skills on TikTok. He was basically making jokes about his area and surroundings.

At the time, there weren’t many club beats with bridges and hooks. Those music beats were just meant for dancing. However, there have been new introductions that allow for breaks and opportunities to rap.

With his love for rap and club music, the rapper then decided to try something. He heard a song which brought back fond memories for him and so he decided to make a song from it.

Bandman went into his closet, played the beat, spent about 15 minutes saying random things into the microphone, and came out with the song ‘Heartbroken’.

Interestingly, at the time he recorded this song, he had COVID. A day after he got well from the virus, Heartbroken went viral on TikTok after its release and that was the beginning of rapping over club beats for Bandmarill.

3. He Would’ve been a Boxer, Music Aside

The Heartbroken singer revealed that he was spending a lot of time in the gym before music happened. He was a boxer and his after-school activity was sparring in the gym.

When the pandemic shut down all outdoor activities, he found solace in music and viola! his newfound career.

However, he also revealed that if he could choose between music and boxing, he would go back to boxing.

A post shared by IM SO JERSEY (@bandmanrill)

The Real Hips (2022) singer decided that he no longer wants to be Bandmanrill and he simply wants to remain Bandman.

Although the ‘rill’ in his stage name was derived from his real name ‘Sirill’, it also represents the ‘drill’ form of music.

Initially, the young rapper was known as a Jersey club and drill artist. But his decision to disassociate himself from the drill music came as a result of how he is often misjudged.

People who do drill music are often looked upon with suspicion and weirdly and Sirill didn’t want that type of identity. Now, he wants to simply be known as a Jersey Club musical artist.

5. He is Signed to Warner Music Group

In 2022, Bandman signed a recording deal with Warner Music Group and that was where he recorded and released a lot of his recent music and EP.

He has released projects such as Copy and Paste, Influence, Jiggy in Jersey, and more, under this record label.

Additionally, the rapper released his album titled Club Godfather under Warner Music Group. The album has 13 tracks which are all evidence that he isn’t a one-hit wonder when it comes to making banging club-sound music.

From the very first single which propelled him into fame and stardom, the Newark Jersey Club rap artist found himself a producer and said he would never let go.

He has chosen young New Jersey producer, MCVertt to be his producer because he relates better with the beats from him.

They became friends when the producer was about 16 years old and have remained close ever since. On Club Godfather, MCVertt is responsible for 7 of the songs released.

In fact, both of them are almost inseparable as they produce magic in sounds.

The common factor Bandman and MCVertt have is the fact that they are both interested and invested in selling Newark and New Jersey sound to the world while also being protective of it.

They want the world to be familiar with their peculiar sound and also adopt it but also always give back credit to New Jersey.

7. He has a Movement

Club Godfather crooner, Bandmanrill has a movement where he brings younger artists under his umbrella. The criterion for being a part of this movement is being from Jersey. He helps train these youngins on Jesery drill and Jersey club songs.

DeVante Swing has made a name for himself as a rapper, songwriter, and record producer. He is notable for being one of the founding members of the R&B group, Jodeci alongside his younger brother Dalvin DeGrate. Through his career exploits, the Hampton-grown entertainer has contributed to the creative work of other musicians like Timbaland, and Missy Elliot.

Apart from his career, Devante is also the father of two children; a son, Justin Degrate, and a daughter, Dyana DeGrate. Like his father, Justin has also launched a career as a singer-songwriter and record producer. However, this cannot be said for his daughter who has taken a controversial path as a strip dancer which has put her in a position of criticism.

The 54–year-old Music Producer is from Hampton

DeVante Swing was born Donald Earle DeGrate Jr. on September 29, 1969, in Hampton, Virginia to Rev. Donald Degrate, a church minister, and Mary Degrate. He grew up alongside a younger brother, Dalvin DeGrate. Moreso, DeVante’s father was also a musician who is notable for the 1979 song I Wanna Be Ready.

Unsurprisingly, the brother’s lives were influenced by the message of the gospel as they started practicing their craft in the choir at Christ Tabernacle Church where Donald was pastoring. Also, they toured with their father during his presentations, an experience that they would later use in their own music career.

He Became Popular Singing with Jodeci

As mentioned earlier, he and his brother, DeGrate started singing as part of a gospel choir. Yet, they later left the church and founded Jodeci, a quartet comprising Devante, DeGrates, and two other friends, Jojo Hailey and K-Ci Hailey.

After coming together, they moved to New York to concentrate on their career. Shortly after their move, they met Andre Harrell of Uptown Records who signed them. They released their first album My Lady to great acclaim. Following this, the group released two more albums which were equally as successful.

While the band’s rise also meant DeVante and the other members were getting more popular, they also had their share of controversies involving drug use and allegations of sexual harassment. It would be recalled that in 1992, DeVante and K-Ci were accused of sexually assaulting a woman at gunpoint. The following year, they were accused of harassing a female participant in one of their videos, yet nothing was made of it. Regardless of these unverified accusations, things soon came to a standstill when Jodeci disbanded in 1996.

One would be curious to ask what truly happened to make a successful band quit at the peak of its career. According to speculations, it was a result of creative differences due to the growing ambition of individual members as well as financial disagreements and personal issues caused by drug use.

He produced many Successful Musicians Through his Record Label

Aside from his work in Jodeci, he has extended his work to other musical acts, especially during the earliest stages of their careers. Through his record label, Swing Mob, he signed artists including Stevie J, Missy Elliot, Timbaland, and Ginuwine. Looking at these names, they are some of the big names in the industry.

Away from his signees, he also traded his craft as a producer on famous songs like TuPac’s All Eyez on Me.

Is Devante Swing Married?

From what we gathered, DeVante is not married at the moment. Moreover, he chooses to keep his private life away from the public making it difficult to know if he is dating someone.

Nonetheless, he was married to a woman identified as Miranda Santana in the past. Prior to the marriage, Miranda was previously in a relationship with Tremaine Neberson. She welcomed her daughter, Nia Santana Neberson when she was 15. Sadly, Neberson left her to raise the child alone.

He is the Father of Two Children

Moving on, DeVante and Miranda welcomed two children, Justin Degrate, and Dyana Degrate. On their own, DeVante’s children have forged their career paths.

According to Justin’s Instagram profile, he is a composer and a close look at his updates shows that he is deeply involved in music production, singing, writing, and directing. According to IMDB, he is credited with a composition for the 2018 short drama, Your Lips Kiss Well, but They Lie Better.

Dyana, on the other hand, is a stripper and this has drawn criticism from people who feel she should do other work considered ‘better’. She has defended her choice. Apparently, the mother of one has been on her own for a long time. She revealed her mother left when she was 14 and her father when she was 19. We gathered that DeVante did not accept her choice.

What is DeVante Swing Upto?

Looking at his rise to fame, he noticeably keeps a low profile these days. Regardless of this, DeVante is alive and still pursuing his career. In 2010, DeVante made waves for not-so-good reasons. According to reports made available by TMZ, he was arrested for being publicly drunk at a Subway restaurant in Burbank, California.

Apparently, the police were alerted when he was seen falling and crashing on the floor. Upon arrival, the police arrested him and took him to the station. The singer was later released around 11 p.m. when he had sobered up. It was also revealed that he would not charged for any crime. Following the incident, he once more disappeared from the public eye.

The next time anything was heard about him was in 2014 when Jodeci staged a reunion. While many had assumed that the band had broken up due to its long silence, Dalvin clarified that it had never done so. From what we gathered, Swing now lives in L.A. Considering that Jodeci performed at the 2022 BET awards, we can conclude that Swing is very much vested in music.

Dédé’s career spanned more than four decades and produced compositions such as; Mon Pauvre Coeur: Mélodie(1852) and Quasimodo Symphony.

Personal Profile of Edmond Dédé

  • Full Name: Edmond Dédé
  • Date of Birth: November 20, 1827
  • Died: January 5, 1903
  • Zodiac Sign: Scorpio
  • Place of Birth: Louisiana, New Orleans
  • Nationality: American
  • Ethnicity: Creoles
  • Religion: Christianity
  • Sexuality: Straight
  • Marital Status: Married
  • Spouse: Sylvie Leflet
  • Children: 1, Eugène Dédé

Who is Edmond Dédé?

Edmond Dédé is a composer and opera singer who was born on November 20, 1827, in New Orleans to Haitian parents. His parents moved to the US from the west indies in 1809 while fleeing the Haitian revolution. Also, his father, a musician who also sang in the military band had great influence on his son’s interest in music.

Dédé started playing the clarinet but later switched to the violin, an instrument that became a signature to his career.

As mentioned earlier, his father was a great influence on him, yet, he was trained by other teachers including Ludovico Gabici, Constantin Debergue, and Eugène Prévost.

While honing his skills, he performed operas of famous musicians like Rodolphe Kreutzer.

Edmond Dédé Struggled To Launch a Successful Music Career in New Orleans

Edmond Dédé’s music career was filled with many challenges including racial segregation. Having launched a music career in his native New Orleans, his stellar performance attracted a large following for the composer and violinist, yet, it did not bring him the needed success.

One challenge he faced was selling his performance. At the time white composers put their faces on the cover of their sheets, unlike colored people. Also, he was not allowed to stage his opera in New Orleans even though he wrote beautiful music.

This forced him to move to Mexico at the age of 19. While there, he started working in a cigar factory to support himself. He returned to New Orleans around 1852. In the same year, he composed Mon Pauvre Coeur: Mélodie.

However, the civil war made his chances of having a successful career almost impossible forcing him to move to France in 1855.

He Had a Career Turn around in France

While in France, Dédé had a career breakthrough. After moving to France, he auditioned at different conservatoires -a places for studying classical music or other forms of arts mostly in Europe.

Soon enough, he was admitted to the Paris Conservatoire after he passed the audition in 1857. It was also while there that he met the famous French composers, Jean Delphin Alard and Jacques-François Halevy.

After his studies, he worked as an assistant conductor at the Grand Théâtre of Bordeaux, one of the famous theaters in France.

Aside from this, the New Orleans-born composer also spent the next 27 years conducting the orchestra at Theatre l’Alcazar in Paris. Aside from his work there, he also did smaller orchestras at Folies Bordelaise.

Shortly after the American civil ended, Dédé decided to return to the United States for a performance of his Quasimodo Symphony.

The planned event had been premiered on May 10, 1865, by Samuel Snaer Jr. pulled a huge crowd of both whites and colored people. However, Edmond did not show up marking the beginning of other absences.

Edmond Dédé Compositions

  • Chicago: Grande valse à l’américaine(1892)
  • Morgiane ou Le sultan d’Ispahan(1887)
  • Le Serment de l’Arabe: Chant dramatique(1865)
  • Le Serment de L’Arabe (1865)
  • Le Palmier Overture (1865)
  • Quasimodo Symphony(1860s)
  • Méphisto Masqué(1860s)
  • Mon Pauvre Coeur: Mélodie(1852)

It Took Him Many Decades to Return to New Orleans

The great conductor’s success was not felt in his native New Orleans and all his attempts to come ended in failure. On his last attempt in 1893, twenty-eight years later, he suffered misfortune as a result of a shipwreck in which he lost his violin.

The loss of the violin affected his performance.

Even after arriving safely, he was once rejected from performing at major venues due to racial segregation. However, his fans organized benefit concerts in his honor. Moreso, his return also helped in the legal battle against racial segregation. This would lead to the Plessy v. Ferguson ruling in 1896 – a controversial ruling which made it clear that racial laws did not violate the US constitution.

The Music Composer’s Marriage with Sylvie Leflet

Apart from having a thriving career in France, Edmond Dédé got married to a French woman from Toulouse in 1864. At the time of their marriage, Sylvie was twenty-nine years old. Importantly, the marriage was celebrated as another victory against slavery considering that Sylvie was a white woman.

Their marriage coincided with his musical breakthrough.

Notably, the marriage produced their only child, a son named Eugène Dédé who was born on January 12, 1867, in Bordeaux, France.

Per his son’s career, he also followed in his father’s footsteps as a music composer. Over the years, his compositions have been confused with that of his famous father.

The Death of Edmond Dédé

After many decades of composing and performing in orchestras, Edmond Dédé died on January 5, 1903, in the 14th arrondissement, France.

Among his legacies is Mon Pauvre Coeur: Mélodie, one of the oldest music sheets by a Creole born in New Orleans. His music compositions are kept at the Bibliothèque Nationale de France.

During his 194th birthday celebration in 2021, Google displayed him on its doodle in France and the US.
